Obituary

Calvin L. Miller, of Naperville, formerly of Sugar Grove, passed away Thursday January 18, 2018. He was born June 12, 1934 in Delavan, IL, the son of the late Henry and Elsie (Bruns) Miller.

Cal is survived by his wife, Ann, his eight children and their spouses, Teresa (Joe) Martini, Jayne (Lyle) Wachtel, Diane (Wasson) Beckman, Judi (Alex) George, Sharon (Bill) Craigle, Jim (Lori) Miller, Jennifer (Lance) Jansen and Steve (Tracy) Miller. They are blessed with eighteen grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Norma Jean Wiggers.

Cal's youth was spent in East Peoria, IL where he graduated from East Peoria High School. He studied engineering at University of Illinois and Bradley University. He met his wife of sixty-two years on the tennis courts at the University of Illinois. Cal celebrated a forty-five-year career at Caterpillar and was recognized for his contribution with numerous patents. While retired, he continued to follow the company and remained connected with his former co-workers and the CAT dealers. They had great fun white-water rafting in Wisconsin, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Always the engineer, Cal built two homes for the family, one in Creve Coeur, IL and one in Morton, IL. Cal enjoyed water sports including canoeing and sailing and spent many weekends with his family on Lake Geneva or Lake Michigan with his boat. He volunteered for many civic, school and church organizations throughout his life and remained active in his parish, St. Katharine Drexel. His philosophy was to participate in the community to make it better place to live. Cal liked to travel but his favorite place was Hilton Head Island. Since the mid 1970's, Cal and Ann traveled to Hilton Head Island for many vacations and to escape the cold winter months in IL. He loved the good seafood restaurants, the Jazz Club, the bike trails and wide-open beaches. We all remember Cal and his love for his two dogs, Lucky and Bear. He was one of the first individuals to participate in pet therapy at Marionjoy Rehab.

Cal and Ann have a large family of thirty-six, eight grown children, their spouses and eighteen grandchildren. Each one had a special relationship with him and he enjoyed attending the family activities to celebrate life and special events.
