Joel A. Binder, 70 years old, of Aurora passed away the afternoon of Sunday, February 11th, at Presence Mercy Medical Center. Joel was born on August 11, 1947 in DeKalb, Illinois, son of the late Lester and Orva Binder. He graduated from Hinckley Big-Rock High School and then graduated from Aurora University in 1969 with a Bachelors of Science in Business. He then went on to get an MBA at Northern Illinois University in 1970. He also graduated from Northwestern University's Trust school and from the American Institute of Banking. After completing his degrees, he started work at Merchants National Bank in Aurora where he met the love of his life, Kathy O'Brien, a fellow coworker. They were married in August 1974 and enjoyed more than 43 years of marriage together. Much of his life was devoted to being a loving husband, father and grandfather always taking time to attend the many sports events and extracurricular activities for them as well as the family vacations taken.

He started his business career as an officer in the Trust department and continued to spend the next 47 years of his career in wealth management. He was a former President of the Exchange Club in Aurora, an Eagle Scout, on the Sunnymere Retirement Community Board, and continued his career as the Executive Vice President at Old Second National Bank. He was passionate about the stock market and all his favorite Chicago sports teams. He was an avid reader who also enjoyed an active life, playing golf frequently at Aurora Country Club. He was a joy to all who knew him.

Joel is survived by his loving family including: his wife, Kathy Binder of Aurora, Illinois; his daughter, Jennifer (Gary) Sutphin of Montgomery, Illinois; his son, Michael (Claire) Binder of Atherton, CA; and one grandchild, Jacob Sutphin, and was looking forward to the arrival of his newest grandchild. He is also survived by a large extended family which included brothers and sisters in law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A visitation will be held Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 4 PM – 8 PM at The Healy Chapel, 370 Division Drive, Sugar Grove, Illinois 60554. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 AM on Friday, February 16, 2018 at the chapel.
