Obituary

John F. ("Don't call me Francis") O'Neil, 56, of Aurora, Illinois, passed away on the evening of August 31, 2019 after a long battle with Huntington's Disease.

John was born on April 19, 1963 in Sterling, IL to Thomas and Nancy (Price) O'Neil. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School, where he was a proud member of the St. Mary's School Patrol, before attending Newman High School, where he was a school-record holding track and field athlete, as well as a football player. While in high school, he traded his newspaper boy bag and bike in for the greasy aprons of A&W, and met the love of his life. In 1979, Nancy Barnett and John O'Neil began dating, and the rest was history. They married on October 5, 1985 after John had graduated from North Central College of Naperville. John worked as a telecommunications engineer for 18 years at AT&T/Lucent Technologies until 2006. During this time, John and Nancy had two children and moved to their permanent residence on Downer Place in Aurora.

In May of 2019, John's condition worsened and he was placed in Jennings Terrace, a nursing care facility. After an eventful summer with lots of family, friends, and food, the fight became too much and he passed away in his sleep.

He loved and often missed running and biking after he was unable to do so. He appreciated beautiful scenery, beaches, particularly in Rhode Island, any and all chocolate, and a well-timed pun. He was a caring father, a loving husband, a camping aficionado, a Lincoln admirer, and a self-proclaimed master of the grill. He was a lover of coin collecting, Black & Tans, the Chicago Bears, Civil War memorabilia, and all things worthy of his O'Neil sweet tooth. While he was stubborn as only an Irishman can be, he was a wonderful man with incredible strength, a loving heart, a true gentleman, and an extraordinary family man.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Barnett-O'Neil; his children, Collin and Bailey O'Neil; his siblings, Joseph O'Neil, Denny O'Neil, Michael O'Neil, Tim O'Neil, Matthew O'Neil, Ellen Meidl and Suzanne Sissel; his many nieces and nephews; many family and friends.

He will be missed.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2019 from 1 P.M. until the service hour of 5 P.M. at The Healy Chapel, 332 W Downer Pl, Aurora, IL 60506. He will be laid to rest at the West Batavia Cemetery, 900 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia, IL 60510 on Monday, September 9, 2019 in a private service.
