Obituary for Leigh A. Jaffke

February 3, 1962 - January 23, 2019
Yorkville, Illinois | Age 56

Leigh Ann Jaffke, 56, of Yorkville, passed away peacefully January 23, 2019 after a brief battle with ovarian cancer. She was born February 3, 1962 to W.W. (Jeff) and Arlene (Meyers) Jaffke, Leigh attended West Aurora schools, participated in basketball, and graduated from West Aurora High School with the Class of 1980. Leigh then went on to play college basketball at East Tennessee State University where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Education in 1984. During her time at ETSU, she was convinced by Mr. Mark Proctor to try coaching. She was hooked immediately and began a coaching career that included coaching girls and boys at all levels, including Assistant Varsity coach in the Sycamore school district. In 2000, Leigh became the Athletic Director at Kaneland High School until her retirement in 2013. Leigh worked tirelessly to make the students that she came in contact with feel important and supported. Her goal was to make them better people first and the rest would fall into place. In 2009, Leigh was inducted into the West Aurora Athletic Hall of Fame in recognition of her accomplishments as a Blackhawk and in her professional career. Her contributions to the lives of thousands of students throughout her career will not be forgotten.

Leigh is survived by her loving wife Kris Weiss, her mother Arlene (Meyers) Jaffke; a sister, Lauren (John Suter) Jaffke; a brother Bryan (Emily) Jaffke; three nephews Ryan, Adam, and Cody; one niece Shannon and a host of family and friends in education. Although Leigh never had any children of her own, she felt all of her students and athletes were her "kids".

Leigh was preceded in death by her father W.W. (Jeff) Jaffke in 2012, a loss from which she never recovered.
