Obituary

Marjorie Marian Michael was born on New Year's Day, 1921 in Aurora, Illinois. She was the first born child of parents Clyde Lamont Michael and Lillian Eberly Michael. She married Michael Robert "Bob" Harkins on August 26, 1946 at St. Mary's Church in Aurora. She and Bob had four sons; Thomas, Edward (Mary Ann), Kenneth (Lu Anne) and Donald (Lorelai), five grandchildren (Jeff, Bill, Andy, Mike, and Maureen) and seven great grandchildren (Jacob, Owen, Declan, Natalie, Finn, Caleb and Aidan). She was also very close to nieces Janet Michael (Edward) and Joyce Fitting (Donald), nephew David Michael, and a large extended family.

Preceding her in death were her father Clyde Michael (1952), mother Lillian Michael (1945), husband Michael "Bob" Harkins (1984), sister Mildred Orland (1981), brother Forrest Michael (2006), nephew David Michael (1975) and grandson William Harkins (2010).

Marjorie went to Young School in Aurora for her elementary school years, Bardwell School for junior high years and then East Aurora High School where she graduated in 1939. After high school and before she was married, Marjorie worked several jobs…at Johnson's Oil Company, Barber Green and Western United Gas and Electric Company. She did mostly secretarial work, but at Western United she also did knitting during breaks (making "GI Sweaters") for soldiers overseas during the war years. She "retired" from Western United Gas and Electric after WW II ended. She married Michael "Bob" Harkins a year later and she became a wife, mother and homemaker for the rest of her life. Marjorie was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Aurora.

Later in life, when she was almost 60 years old, she learned how to drive and got her driver's license making her more independent. She also traveled regularly with her sons Don & Tom and also with her brother and sister-in-law, Forrest & Caroline Michael. She not only traveled around the country, but also to England and Spain. She very much enjoyed those trips. She also became very active in several social groups including Friends of Phillips Park, First Presbyterian Seniors and the Salvation Army. She remained very active with her travels and membership activities well into her 80's.

By her mid 90's, Marjorie found it harder to get around and became more home bound. The last three years of her life, she was largely non ambulatory. However, she was very proud of the fact that she was able to continue living at home and made it very clear to her family that is what she wanted. Having dedicated caregivers on a 24/7 basis and having her oldest son Tom living with her and taking excellent care of her allowed that to happen.

As her health continued to deteriorate, she entered in-home hospice care in late August and passed away peacefully at home on October 15, 2018.
