Obituary

Nickolas Ernest Stemas, age 83, passed away peacefully on May 26th 2019 at 9:00am at his home in Norway, IL. He was born October 11, 1935 in Nemea, Greece. His parents were Eleni Giannakopoulos and Anastasios Stemagiotis, brother Constantinos, sisters Voula, Betty, and Filitsa. Nick married in Delores Peicich on August 22, 1959 in Chicago, Illinois. They were happily married for 60 years. They had two children Elaine (59) and the late Nickolas (53). Big Nick was a avid sports fan that enjoyed wrestling, baseball, hockey, and football. He coached his children and grandchildren's basketball, softball and baseball teams. He enjoyed gardening, singing and dancing, and listening to music of all kind including opera music perhaps his favorite, Yanni. Nick loved being around children and especially loved playing with his grandchildren. Nick and Delores built a beautiful life together living in Berwyn, IL. and eventually moving to Norway, IL. where they would establish their longtime family home on a beautiful and peaceful property located amidst the trees on a serene private lake. Nick loved to spend time at his home surrounded by family and friends, often hosting family parties and holiday celebrations and watching big sporting events on his big screen T.V.
Nick was a self-made success as a long-time owner of several businesses. Through his businesses he touched the lives of many of his employees and customers, always bringing smiles to their faces with his humor and friendship. Nick was a person who others enjoyed being around because of his wonderful smile, charming Greek accent, great sense of humor and ability to talk sports, play Euchre (and cheated?) and tell a good story.

Nick's life story is an inspiring one. Having survived the difficult World War II era in Europe that claimed the lives of several of his family members, Nick was able to escape the difficult post-war climate that impacted his home town in Greece immigrating to the United States through Ellis Island at the young age of 16 with very little money and having lost both of his parents and other family members during the war. Completely on his own with little help from others, Nick was able to create a life that would go on to impact so many through a lifetime of hard work, loyalty to his family and friends and perseverance through anything that life threw his way.

Nick is survived by his wife, Delores (Peicich); daughter, Elaine Stemas, siblings, Betty Koskinas (Panagiotis), Dimitris (Aggeliki), Eleni, Panagiotis and Sostis (Voula) and children; grandchildren Christina (Joey), Derek (Randi), Nicholas and Zoe and great-grandchildren Athena, Giovanni and Aria.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents Eleni Giannakopoulos and Anastasios Stemagiotis, son, Nickolas Stemas and sister, Filitsa Tsaoussis.

The family will be greeting friends and relatives at the visitation and funeral service being held at Saint Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church at 1855 5th Ave, Aurora, IL 60504 (https://saintathanasios.com/) on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. until the service at 12 p.m. The burial will take place following the services at The Lincoln Memorial Park at 675 Route 30 Aurora, IL 60503.
