Paul Martin Tomell, 93, of Aurora, was called by his Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018. He passed peacefully at home.

He was born April 25, 1924, in Detroit, Mich., to Adolph and Pauline (Nickel) Tomell.

His abiding faith in God's love inspired a lifetime of Christian service along with his late wife, Marian (Warns) Tomell. Active members of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Aurora, they volunteered with the Red Cross disaster relief program, assisting during fires, floods and other calamities day or night for many years. They also trained as storm watchers.

The couple led a Bible class for adults with disabilities for 17 years and assisted at Lutheran church camps. He led Bible study classes and visited the homebound, often bringing flowers from his garden and sharing his handyman skills. An elder at the church, he arrived early to shovel the walks and open the doors to welcome parishioners. He was active in Toastmasters and as a Republican precinct committeeman.

After serving in the Army during World War II in the European theater, he attended Valparaiso University in Indiana on the GI Bill, helping construct the engineering building on campus where he earned his degree in mechanical engineering.

He met his future wife, Marian, while both were students at the university. The couple were married June 18, 1949, in Wentworth, S.D.

After arriving in Aurora, he was employed by Thor Power Tool Co. and Teledyne Pines, retiring from Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia.

He is survived by six sons, James (Marilyn) of the Philippines, David (Renee) of Geneva, Mark (Karen) of Huson, Mont., Daniel (Laura) of Tecumseh, Mich., Michael (Deborah) of Frenchtown, Mont., and Phillip (Mary) of Adrian, Mich.; a sister, Emily Hartstirn of Urbana; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Judy Hookana, and her husband, Wesley; and brother-in-law Walter Hartstirn.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the 1:30 p.m. funeral service Friday, Jan. 12, in The Healy Chapel at 332 W. Downer Place in Aurora. The Rev. William Beckmann will officiate. A gathering for friends and family will follow at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 550 Fourth Ave., Aurora. Interment will be at Lincoln Memorial Park on Route 30 in Aurora.
