Robert (Bob) Harold Shelp, 92, passed away September 4, 2018, in Stuart, Florida. Bob was born on March 8, 1926, in Aurora, Illinois to Harold and Grace (Kennedy) Shelp.

Bob attended the West Side Public Schools in Aurora. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy for two years, and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. In 1951, he also earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering.

His apprenticeship included two years of structural engineering followed by two years with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in Chicago, where he was a member of the design team for the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs. In 1957, Bob established his own firm in Aurora, where he was responsible for the design of homes, banks, office and industrial buildings, churches, schools, and courthouses throughout the area.

In 1968, Bob joined the partnership of Kleb, Shelp and Associates in Aurora; in 1973, he again established his own private practice. He was also a licensed real estate broker and a member of the Aurora Board of Realtors.

Bob was a member of The American Institute of Architects Chicago for more than fifty years, and was past President of the Western Communities Architects Association.

He was also an active member of his community. He was a member of the New England Congregational Church, the Greater Aurora Chamber of Commerce, and the Union League Club. He served as President of the Board of Directors of Plum Landing and was past President of the Aurora Rotary Club. Bob was also a forty year member of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Illinois as a Master Mason of Lodge #254.

Bob married Martha Wells Shelp in 1953; they were married for 53 years. In retirement, Bob and Martha enjoyed their lives together in Michigan City, Indiana and on Hutchinson Island, Jensen Beach, Florida. He was an avid lap swimmer, never missing a day while at his condo and lake house. He also enjoyed a good walk on the beach in the afternoons and weekly golf outings.

Survivors include his sister Patricia Daw of Bay Village, Ohio; son Peter (Ann) Shelp of Minnetonka, MN and their children, Andrew (Erin), Molly, and Kate (Matt Follese); daughter Nancy Shelp Linsner and her daughter, Rose, of Minneapolis, MN.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, wife Martha, sister Eleanor Diehl, and brother Donald Shelp.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at The Healy Chapel, 332 W. Downer Pl., Aurora, IL 60506. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will take place at Spring Lake Cemetery.
