Sammie J. Brown, 70, of Aurora, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at her home. She was born December 2, 1938 in Peoria, Illinois, the daughter of the late Eke and Madeline (Woods) Polk.

Sammie retired from the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles after 30 years of service. She also worked for 20 years at Speedway Gas in Aurora.

Survivors include her children, Kay Wilder, Ricky Alonzo (Reyne) Brown, Beverly Sherrod-Van Buskirk and George Brown, Jr.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; brothers, Charles and Rev. Stan Avery and John Polk; her sisters, Claudia Hightower and Joan Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who loved her very much. She has now taken that one way flight to heaven.

Sammie was preceded in death by her husband George Brown in 1993; a son, Erastus Spencer, Jr. in 2007 and a sister, Marie Jones.

A homegoing celebration will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 11 AM at Gayles Memorial Baptist Church, 730 Gillette Ave., Aurora, IL. Rev. Ed Johnson and Rev. Stan Avery will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 AM until the service hour on Thursday at church. Interment will be at Spring Lake Cemetery.
