Obituary for Tina (Edna A.) Gallanis

October 25, 1931 - May 1, 2018
Batavia, Illinois | Age 86

Surrounded by her loving children, Edna A. "Tina" Gallanis, 86, of Batavia, IL, died peacefully on May 1, 2018, after a yearlong struggle with cancer. She was born on October 25, 1931 in Peoria, IL to John and Bessie Makedon.

Tina was a 1950 graduate of Rock Island Senior High School. She earned professional certifications from the Mortgage Bankers Association of Professional Study in Mortgage Loan Processing and Mortgage Loan Services.

Tina was a single, working mother and raised her four children in Sugar Grove, IL. Tina lived in Aurora for many years. For the last five years, Tina lived at Heritage Woods of Batavia, where she enjoyed an active social life playing Bingo, card games and attending many parties and festivities.

She began her career in mortgage banking at Modern American Mortgage Corporation in 1969 in downtown Aurora, IL and worked there 20 years. Then she worked for the Principal Financial Group and ended her career at Chase Bank when she retired at age 72.

While she wasn't working, Tina spent time with her children and extended family. Her door was always open to all of her children's friends and the house was usually full of the kids and their friends, and Tina's brother and his wife and children too!

Tina was an avid reader, a passionate card player, a fan of old movies, and whiz at crossword and puzzles.

Her family remembers her most as an accomplished home chef with an extensive library of cookbooks and old recipes from her mother and aunts. In addition to excelling at home-cooked Greek food, she also explored other cuisines.

Beginning in the 1970s, Tina spent Saturday afternoons watching Julia Child and other professional chefs on television and she recreated many of these meals for her family.

She enjoyed baking and during the holidays made dozens upon dozens of cookies to give as gifts to her children, grandchildren and friends. A proud chocoholic, Tina said that her highest culinary accomplishment was making Julia Child's famous recipe Triple Chocolate Threat, a mousse-filled chocolate cake draped in chocolate sauce.

Tina's greatest joy and purpose in life was to raise and spend time with her four children and her grandchildren.

Tina is survived by her four children, Bess (Richard Hayes) Gallanis, Stephanie (Stephen) Hesser, Connie (H. Lee) Murphy and Peter (Chriselda) Gallanis; her grandchildren, Sgt. Benjamin Bulger, Alexander Gallanis and Antonia Gallanis; a brother,Gust (Eileen) Makedon; a niece, Mary Lisa (Alan) Porche, nephews, John Makedon and John (Karen) Benakis, and many great nieces and nephews and their children.

Tina was preceded in death by her parents, John and Bessie Makedon of Rock Island, IL; her sister, Betty Benakis, and her nephew, Nicholas Benakis of Aurora, IL.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018, from 1-3 p.m., followed by a memorial service at The Healy Chapel, 370 Division Drive, Sugar Grove, IL, 60554.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in the name of Tina Gallanis, to the American Cancer Society.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Heritage Woods of Batavia, and Northwestern Home Health and Hospice for their loving care of Tina.
