Obituary for William J. Wrona

November 12, 1938 - December 21, 2018
Orland Park, Illinois | Age 80

William J. Wrona (Bill or affectionately Pudge), who was born on November 12, 1938 in Hammond, Indiana, passed away Friday, December 21, 2018 in St. Charles, Illinois at the age of 80. He was the son of the late William and Helen Wrona.

Bill was raised in the Hegewisch neighborhood of Chicago and earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from Purdue University in West Lafayette. After graduation, he landed a job in Chicago working as an engineer for the Amoco Oil Company. While working at Amoco in Houston, he earned his MBA from the University of Houston. Bill returned to Chicago and eventually took on a senior management role at Amoco helping develop, finance, and construct operating assets throughout the world until he retired at the age of 58.

Bill was an accomplished college baseball player at Purdue University, always known for his love of the sport and his life-long loyalty to his teams, both the Purdue Boilermakers and the Chicago White Sox. He imparted his love of sports to his children and equally enjoyed coaching little league baseball for ten years, ultimately raising accomplished athletes of his own. He was an involved and devoted father who offered his children an inspiring and progressive perspective that there were no limitations for any of them.

Besides his love of family and sports, he had a great passion for travel which he also passed along to his children. He was a true world traveler who exposed the family to nearly every state in the US and meticulously planned and experienced incredible travel itineraries with his wife, Carol, to over sixty countries spanning six continents. He always enjoyed new experiences in far off places and always came to the same conclusion that "people are good wherever you go."

What we will remember most about Bill is his fun and amiable demeanor. We could always count on him and his trade-mark wit to elicit a laugh particularly while he sat on his lanai in Florida watching a spectacular sunset over the Gulf of Mexico while sipping a cold martini. Humor was such an ingrained part of his nature that he retained his sense of humor even after he lost his memory. His love of laughter will continue to inspire us all to find joy and lightheartedness in life even at the hardest times.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Carol Wrona; his daughters Dawn Wrona Eby (William Eby) and Beth Wrona Murphy (Jeffrey Murphy); his son William S. Wrona; his brother John Wrona; and his four beautiful and adoring grandchildren, Billy and Christopher Eby and Paul and Carin Murphy, all living in the Chicago area.

A short memorial service to celebrate the life of Bill Wrona will be held at Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, 176 Main St., Sugar Grove, IL 60554 at 11 AM on Saturday, May 25, 2019 followed by a gathering at the home of Dawn Wrona Eby and family in Sugar Grove.
